Museum Island - A Haven for Art & Culture

Berlin is a city that never fails to impress, and its Museum Island is no exception. This beautiful ensemble of five museums located in the heart of the city is an absolute must-visit for anyone who loves art, culture, and history.

One island, six museums, countless artifacts. Find out what to expect and what to see inside:

Alte Nationalgalerie

The Alte Nationalgalerie is the home of Germany's 19th-century art collections. From Romantic paintings to Impressionist masterpieces. You'll find works by famous artists such as Caspar David Friedrich, Max Liebermann, and Eduard Manet, to name a few. If you're a fan of 19th-century art, this is the place for you. One of my favorite Museums in all Berlin.

The Bode Museum as well as the Alte Nationalgalerie are very popular spots for photo or movieshoots. They truly are magnificent buildings. The video to the right was shot almost completely shot on Museum Island.

Altes Museum

The Altes Museum showcases ancient art and artifacts from the classical world. From Greek, Roman and Etruscan sculptures to Egyptian artifacts. The building houses the largest collection of Etruscan art outside Italy. One highlight is the light-filled rotunda at the entrance filled with antique sculptures and splendid caskets. It also houses one of the most significant coin collections with over 1300 coins ranging from the 7th century BC to the 3rd century AD.

In the video on the left you can peak inside the Neues Museum, who were kind enough to let me film there. Oh boy didn’t they know what they signed up for^^

Pergamon Museum

And third, it houses one of the world's largest collections of Southwest Asian art. The exhibits cover a period from the 6th millennium BCE into the time of the Muslim conquests. They originate particularly from today's states of Iraq, Syria and Turkey. Highlight is for sure the Ishtar Gate.

Often listed as one of the most impressive collections of antiquities in the world, The Pergamon Museum houses 3 museums inside, the Collection of Classical Antiquities, which displays its famous architectures. The main attraction is the Pergamon Altar from the 2nd century BC. Its large sculptural frieze, a masterpiece of Hellenism.

Secondly it houses the Museum of Islamic Arts which is the only institution of its kind in Germany and the oldest outside the Islamic world. With its over 100,000 works of art and crafts  of ancient Middle Eastern art and architecture.

Berlin Dome

The dome is technically not a museum but still church in operation. Nonetheless it’s one major tourist attraction with magnificent exterior and interior architecture certainly worth checking out. You can either choose to go casually during the day (there’s also viewing deck on top) or attend one of it’s many concerts & events.

Have a peak inside and let Dr. Stephanie Pearson tell you a little bit about the museums.

Humboldt Forum

The Humboldt forum is the newest addition to the museums landscape of Berlin. It opened its doors only in 2020 and has its seat in the reconstructed Berlin Palace which was demolished in 1950 due to heavy damage from WW2.

The forum showcases the art and cultural heritage of non-European civilizations, including the exhibits of the Ethnological Museum and the Museum of Asian Art. Visitors can expect to see unique and diverse collections from all over the world, including valuable artifacts and objects from Africa, Asia, and the Americas. The Humboldt Forum aims to promote intercultural dialogue and understanding, and its exhibitions and events offer a platform for discussion s and debates on contemporary issues.
